Malone is the catalyst that begins the entire ripple effect. Although he functions as the film’s primary antagonist, he should never be played as a stereotypical career criminal. Malone is a man who has spent his entire life convincing himself that the world owed him something it never intended to give him. He doesn’t believe he’s evil. He believes he’s correcting an unfair system. Every theft, every deception, and every act of violence has been rationalized into survival. That self-justification has allowed him to live with his choices for decades. However, by the time Ripple begins, Malone is no longer the fearless criminal he once was.
